Situation Update – Job, College, and Investing!

Wow, it’s been a while since I last updated — about 5 months, actually. Well, a lot has happened since, so I thought that a quick update post was in order to let everyone know what I’ve been up to (and where I stand in my financial journey).

First of all, I got a job working at one of the top 5 largest insurance companies! It’s nothing glamorous like sales or anything like that; I actually work in the call center, taking and filing insurance claims, but it’s still a pretty nice job. The company culture is great, my coworkers are wonderful, I get 1.5 days paid time off per month plus 4 paid personal holidays per year, and there’s plenty of overtime available.

It’s my first-ever salaried job netting me $33,500/year pre-tax, and while it might not seem like a lot of money, for an early twenty-something who still lives as home and whose personal expenses are less than $600/mo, I can definitely say I’m in a nice place. Going forward, I’ll also be taking on some extra overtime each week for an additional $350 per month.

Right now, things are kinda weird with pay since I’m transitioning out of training, but in about a month or so once I determine what my actual paychecks will be with added overtime and shift differential pay, I’ll make a post detailing a breakdown of my monthly income and expenses. I’ll also make a post about my job and its pros and cons once I’m here a bit longer.

Aside from that, I’ve also signed up for my Spring 2018 semester. I’ll be returning to college full-time so that I can finish up my degree — that’s 4 classes, on top of working 40hrs per week, not including overtime. It’s safe to say that I’m going to be absolutely exhausted over the next few months, but… hey. Gotta do what I gotta do.

Additionally, I’ve put my foray into day trading on hold for the time being as I want to focus on saving up enough money for a down payment so that I can purchase my rental property, but I’m hoping to pick it up again later on in the future. I think I’ll save about $50-$75 each month until I have about $1000 saved up to just jump back in and go all out with a real, earnest go at day trading, but in the meantime? I have my sights sent on property investing. Since getting this job, I’ve been able to save $1000/month to make this dream of mine a reality, and I’m expecting to finally have enough saved up by mid to late 2018. I’ll talk more about that at another time, though.

Anyway, I just wanted to pop in and let everyone know that I’m still here and I’m still alive!

Talk to you soon,

NP
